New Peter Wolf album, song

I'm looking forward to the new Peter Wolf album "Midnight Souvenirs". The disc includes several great Boston musicians, as well as cameos from Shelby Lynne, Neko Case and Merle Haggard.

Peter performed “Tragedy” with special guest Shelby Lynne on the “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” on April 5th. You can listen to the song below or on Peter's Facebook page. Shelby Lynne played Johnny D's at 7PM on Sat, May 8. Peter joined her on stage for there too.

  Tragedy by Oedipus

I also found the "Making of" videos very compelling, see below. The second feature Shelby.

Both Peter and J Geils have been important in the Boston Music Scene for years and still play around the area. Several of the musicians shown on the record and in the video (Duke Levine, Kevin Barry) are also pillars of the music community here.

I ran into Peter at the recent Chuck Prophet show at a Lizard Lounge. I wanted to respect his privacy, but also wanted to say hello, so I asked him if he'd be joining Chuck. He said he was asked, but they didn't work anything out. I had the feeling he would have blown the doors off of just about any song with no rehearsal, but he never made it to the stage. He was there, like me, as a music fan and that was cool, too.

    NXNA Challenge

    This is Boston, not Austin.

If you follow modern music like me, then you're painfully aware that the annual SXSW (South by Southwest) music festival is kicking off this weekend. SXSW is one of the largest music events of the year, with more than 1,400 performers playing in more than 80 venues around Austin over four days, in March.

Austin is arguably the Live Music Capitol of the World and SXSW is one of the reasons. This year, the music festival runs Mar 17-21. See the band schedule at sxsw.com for the complete list, which can be a bit overwhelming.

But even though Boston is not Austin (and Not L.A. for that matter), there is a very vibrant music scene here, with world-class theaters, summer amphitheaters and the most attended music club in the world. There's a tight-knit roots community in Cambridge and Somerville, as well as a a vibrant rock scene in Alston Rock City. So, for those of us that are too uncool or maybe too cool to be at SXSW this year, we can find great music here on every night of the festival.

Joan Hathaway on her Three Ring Circus show came up with a great idea to go to shows locally during the festival. We're calling it NXNA (North by Not Austin). My own challenge to myself and other local music advocates is to come up with a schedule great live music to go out to here at home (wherever home may be). And then go out and Support Local  Music!

I'll post my own schedule soon.
